1959 - 1960

When we passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in mid-July for our fifteen week regular overhaul, no one
would have believed that so many things could happen in so short a period of time. We had our skipper selected
for Admiral, we won our second consecutive E, and we rebounded from almost being put out of commission to become
the permanent flagship for Commander First Fleet and shift our home to San Diego. While level problems were being solved,
the majority of us were busily engaged with chipping hammers and paint brushes as the ship received a complete coat of
paint from stem to stern while she was adding new equipment and modernizing the old. In spite of our long working days
we found time to enjoy the beauty and night life of this center of West Coast culture. There was a restaurant and pocket-
book, or a chilly ball game at Candlestick or a relaxing afternoon in Golden Gate Park as it struck your fancy. San Francisco
was a fountain of endless possibilities for those who did not return to Long Beach on the Friday bus rides.
Every time we passed Union Square there
was a gathering of local elder statesmen
who were vigorously and vocally solving
the problems of the world.

As soon as we passed underneath the Golden Gate and off-loaded all our ammunition,
our overhaul began and with it countless fire-watches.

Most of San Francisco is a city. Its extended skyline that rises from the tops and bottoms of its never-ending hills,
its glittering night life and a wealth of little book shops all attest to this fact.
