SPC Tim Herrmann of Kenosha looks over
a mountainous region of Afghanistan
while listening to music. Herrmann was
injured in Iraq in 2007. He deployed
again in May of this year, this time to
Afghanistan. In early October, his remote
outpost near the border with Pakistan
was overrun by extremists. Eight U.S.
troops and two Afghan soldiers were killed.
Herrmann's unit was a few miles away at
the time getting supplies.

Tim Herrmann always wanted to be a soldier.
Here, at age 10, he wears his great-uncle's
World War II Army uniform for Halloween.
